10 Easy Ways to Reduce Plastic on a Budget This Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July is the perfect time to review our plastic waste consumption. What can we tweak and do better!?   Sticking to a budget while doing this can be a challenge. But fear not! We've got you covered with easy and budget-friendly ways to reduce your plastic waste:

  1. Learn more about recycling in your area: This might seem silly, but understanding what can and can't be recycled in your specific area is crucial. More often than not, items we optimistically put in the recycling bin can't actually be recycled (often due to having no end market for the recycled product). Research your local recycling guidelines to ensure you're recycling correctly. This knowledge helps you avoid contamination and maximise the effectiveness of recycling efforts.

  2. Bring your own container: Instead of purchasing meat packaged in plastic, bring your own container to the butcher. They can weigh and fill it with your desired cuts. Not only does this reduce plastic waste, but it also allows you to choose exactly the amount you need, minimising food waste and saving money.

  3. Buy in bulk: Buying in bulk is not only cost-effective but also reduces packaging waste. Look for stores offering bulk bins for grains, nuts, and dried fruits. Please bring your own reusable bags or containers and fill them up, eliminating the need for single-use plastic packaging.

  4. Embrace eco-friendly alternatives: Swap out disposable plastic products with eco-friendly alternatives. Cereal in a cardboard container, chocolate bars in a paper wrapper,  stainless steel water bottles, bamboo toothbrushes etc. These small changes can add up to significant plastic waste reduction over time.

  5. Buy second-hand clothes: We can't all afford natural fibres like 100% wool jackets (as nice as they are!) and often cheaper items do contain plastic or synthetics that don't compost. Second-hand clothes reduce carbon emissions, save lots of resources and cost less.

  6. Bring your own lunch to work: Packing your lunch in a reusable container is cheaper and reduces the need for single-use plastic packaging. Prepare meals at home, store them in a reusable container, and bring them to work or school. It's a win-win for your wallet and the planet.

  7. Subscribe to eco cleaning product refills: Switch to eco-friendly cleaning products and subscribe to refills. With ecyo's range, you can save 20% when you subscribe, and each single pod refill lasts six months (depending on how often you clean). It's a budget-friendly, eco-friendly way to reduce plastic waste while keeping your home clean and fresh.

  8. Choose package-free alternatives: When shopping for personal care and beauty products, opt for package-free or packing reduced alternatives. Deodorant bars, paper-wrapped toilet paper etc.

  9. Start composting: Food waste that goes to landfills contributes to the production of greenhouse gases. Consider starting a compost bin or worm farm to dispose of your food scraps. Composting reduces waste and provides nutrient-rich soil for your garden or potted plants so you can grow better veggies, saving you money in the long run!

  10. Spread the word and inspire others: Share your plastic-free journey with friends, family, and colleagues. Educate them about the importance of reducing plastic waste and provide tips on how they can make a difference on a budget. By inspiring others to join the movement, you can amplify the impact of your individual efforts.

Reducing plastic waste doesn't have to break the bank. By implementing these easy and budget-friendly tips, you can significantly reduce your plastic consumption during Plastic Free July and beyond. Every wee action counts,  together we can positively impact the environment while saving money in the process!
